What is the definition of 'lobbyist'? For the purposes of the Register of Lobbyists, a lobbyist is a person or organisation who represents the interests of a third party to Government. This is particularly useful in helping to avoid conflicts of interest. The Government believes it is important for government officials to know precisely who a lobbyist represents when they have dealings with that lobbyist.
While some lobbyists work directly for a single employer to advance the interests of that employer, there are other lobbyists who represent the interests of a number different third parties. They provide advice on how to deal with Government and can help identify and facilitate meetings with key government officials.
Lobbyists are an important element in our democratic process.
